An incredible opportunity to own a pre-CBS custom colour Fender!
The definitive bass from Fender, these pre-1965 Precision Basses are incredibly special and about as good as it gets. This particular example, with a neck stamp of June '64 and serial number also dating to 1964, exudes vibe and presents beautifully. Composed of an alder body with bolt-on maple neck, this example possess' a veneer rosewood fretboard in addition to its original reverse tuners. Some other cool tidbits include an earlier spaghetti logo (pre-transition) in addition to clay dots on the fretboard.
An inspection under the original pickguard reveals non-original potentiometers (CTS examples that appear to date to 1966) as well as a non-original capacitor. The output jack appears to be period correct, but it could non-original to the instrument. The pickup is an older black bobbin Precision bass pickup, however there are no identifying marks on the underside pickup making it a little difficult to tie down any specifics.
The finish is its original factory lake placid blue with wonderfully authentic play-wear present. Removing the bridge, it appears another bridge had been previously installed. The neck pocket has been sanded back at some stage, and no longer shows a typical stick mark or any pencil marks. Routes and paint shadows all look correct in the internal cavities, and original dowels, and other identifying features are visible on the body.
Cosmetic condition is very good for its age, showing the expected signs of finish wear including discolouration, checking, dings, scratches, and scuffs all throughout. Hardware is fully functional, and plays with a medium/low action. This example is currently strung with a set of flats Thomastik Jazz Flats and feels and sounds fantastic. Includes an original Stamford case, manufactured by W.H. Stamford & Sons out of Sydney and were sold alongside Fender models in Australia during this period.
